Citations, Citations, Citations !

You will spend a significant amount of time, effort, and attention during your college education properly citing sources of information used in your research. Why? Is proper citation worth the effort required? What do you like/dislike about constructing citations, quotations, footnotes, and bibliographies?

I personally hate sitting sources but feel it I necessary to give credit where credit is due. Say there is something in your paper you don’t site, and who ever are reading your paper likes that particular statement. It’s not yours and you’re taking credit for it. Not only is that wrong but the chances that you get caught doing it are great. So as much as I hate taking the time to use MLA format, I still say site your sources.

I think that regardless of how much we all hate citing sources, myself included, it is still a very important part of writing papers. Proper citation is worth the effort for two reasons. First, it gives credit where credit is due. Secondly, it allows others to find where you got all the information that is the basis of the paper that you just wrote. Just like the papers we all just wrote, I didn't know much of the information that is contained within it and the citations help other people to understand how I came about my conclusions. As far as foortnotes, quotations, etc. I personally dislike everything about them. It is not because of what they are there for, but due to the fact that it requires extra time and effort to complete that additional tasks. Most of us students naturally just want to be done with a project, and the more requirements that there are, the more work we must do. So for me it is purely a work based hate and not because it doesn't serve a purpose.

I am fron Nepal and in my country we do not have to cite the sources from where we have extracted the information. So,I don't like spending time on citation but I have to cite here in the United States as it is mandatory.

I often feel that citing sources can be a pain, however, I can see why it is so important to give credit to the sources that you use. Whether it be researching or in the business world, people work very hard to find information that they can use to publish their work. Because of this it is only fair to give them the credit they deserve. I know I would hate to put my heart and soul into my work and have someone else come in and take the credit for my work. By using bibliographies and citations people are able to receive their due credit.

When writing a paper and using another’s work to embolden your paper it’s more than a good idea to give the original writer the credit for his/her efforts. Researchers work hard for their published papers and it would be tantamount to stealing if we fail to show where our papers receive their inspiration or even their credibility. Occasionally a reader of our work seeing a citation might possibly desire to do further research and can utilize our citations. Our papers may also need to be checked for accuracy or relevancy and citations aid in this effort as well.
The primary reason for citing sources, particularly in an academic environment, continues to be the avoidance of plagiarism though. Plagiarism reaches into all levels and disciplines though, just read about Madonna G. Constantine of Columbia U. , historian Stephen Ambrose, US Naval Academy professor of history Brian VanDeMark, The book The Da Vinci Code, prize winning poet Melanie Grobler, or Oscar Wilde and John McCain, just to name a few. All have been accuse of copying someone else’s work at one time or another.

It is important to cite where you obtain your information from so the original author receives credit. If I wrote something, I wouldn't want others taking credit for my hard work. It also helps eliminate plagiarism. There are so many different styles of citing, that sometimes I find it confusing what the differences are between them, and why a difference is even necessary. Quotations are nice, because as long as it’s clear you are quoting someone directly, you can copy what someone says if you need its relevancy.

Citing sources is my least favorite part of constructing a paper, however i realize how necessary it is. people need to know with the utmost accuracy where you got your information from, and thus proper citations are extremely important. I wish there was a more hassle free way to do it, but thats life.
